Last wekend I experimented with something I've wanted to try for ages - making a mulled wine granita! It was a hot day, end of the week and seemed like the perfect opportunity to give it a go.
I started by pouring some white and some red mulled wine into pyrex dishes with lids (separately) and then put them in the freezer. I initially thought I'd have to take them out regularly to 'rough them up', but the alcohol content stopped them from freezing completely solid and made this unnecssary.
So, I ended up with two flavours of granita that I scooped into a crystal dessert cup and ate with a spoon (until my partner stole it from me and later also drank it once melted - he was a fan!). Flavourwise I think the red worked best - I needed that bit of sweetness in a frozen treat. But you could always add a few teaspoons of sugar to the white (or red too) before freezing. The flavours of the red and the white did blend well and it was more visually pleasing having the two colours.
So, I would highly recommend our mulled wine granita for a hot day! It's so simple too as long as you remember to put it in the freezer (probably best the day before).
Let us know how you go if you give this one a try! ;-)
